SAX STONECARVING WORKSHOP 2001
featured guest instructor, Patrick Plunkett, formerly one of the lead stone carvers at Washington's National Cathedral.
Plunkett started his training in 1962 at age 15 as a stone cutter and carver at a Portland stone company in England. He finished his apprenticeship program four years later, and hit the road a journeyman cutter and carver working on church restoration, banks, stately homes, and Gothic cathedrals (Salisbury and Chichester). In 1975, he was recruited to relocate to the US to join the team of stone carvers at Washington National Cathedral, where he carved many crockets, finials, grotesques, label terminations, and hand cut inscriptions. In 1980 he worked with Master Carver Vincent Palumbo to carve the three main tympanum sculptures over the West Doors: "The Creation," "The Creation of Day," and "The Creation of Night," sculpted by Frederick Hart. In 1991 he was invited to assume the full time position of Superintendent of Exterior Restoration of the White House, where he supervised a team of cutters and carvers until the project's completion in 1996. Since that time, he has trained teams in the restoration of National Park Service sites from Vicksburg, Mississippi to the Dry Tortugas, and worked on many embassies and historic buildings in the nation's capital.

SESSION TWO
September 2002
"THE EVOLVING HUMAN FORM" with Alexandra Morosco.
This class was ideal for those who wished to concentrate on carving the human form, and the many variations and abstractions based on it. Morosco helped guide each participant through the essentials of stone carving, from stone selection to final finishing. Morosco, a tool specialist, demonstrated a wide variety of carving tools at the 2003 session.

"EXPLORING UNIVERSAL FORM" with Kazutaka Uchida
Our first experience with Kazutaka Uchida opened a new world of possibilities. His way of working and his approach to the stone had a profound effect on beginner and professional alike.

SAX STONECARVING WORKSHOP 2004
August 2004
"EAST MEETS WEST" with Kazutaka Uchida & Joseph Kincannon
In 2004, the winning combination of Kazutaka Uchida as guest artist and Joseph Kincannon as guest instructor was formed. Kincannon immediately proved himself to be a patient and gifted teacher, while Uchida was an ever-present inspiration. The course examined differences and commonalities between the aesthetics of East and West through discussion, demonstration, and slide presentations, while participants worked throughout on their own projects and challenges.
